Surprisingly, supercars don’t hold their value that well unless they are maintained perfectly by the dealer. Many rich people beat their Ferrari’s mercilessly and the result is chips and dents in the body which they fix on the cheap because restoring the body of a Ferrari is an expensive proposition. Also, these cars have very low ground clearance and use on anything but the most perfect tar surface results in undercarriage damage that is not always visible but expensive to fix — so it’s ignored.

It is possible to get an older but still sexy 308GT Ferrari for about 25,000. I almost bought one, but instead bought a Mercedes 560SL convertible instead. There are a large number of supercars on the market with many cosmetic flaws. You aren’t going to get the dealer to fix them — you’re going to take the car to Maaco and get the cheap putty job. Believe me, when you show up in that older Ferrari leaking oil and with a few door dings, the panties are still going to slide right off. I didn’t believe it at first until I pulled up to the valet at the Marriott in Boston and strange women I never met came right up to me to ask for a ride.

So depending upon how much you want to spend, and how much in the way of cosmetic and mechanical damage you can tolerate, you can easily get a supercar for a reasonable price.

By the merest of chance I happened to be driving by the Ferrari dealer in my town of Norwood in 2010 when the car, which arrived from the port of disembarkation on a two-level covered truck, fell from the top level and smashed onto the ground. I was on Rte 1 passing by when this happened and was totally amazed. Apparently so was the driver next to me — he was so mesmerized by the event that he drove his car into the lightpole next to the dealership. The car had been sold for 500,000 dollars to a customer in Florida, but after falling off the truck the customer demanded a new one. I am guessing that this Ferrari went for a discount as the “scratch  and dent” sale and that the delivery guy works at 7/11 now.
