When Skype sold to eBay for 4 billion dollars, their founders were clever. They put the core Skype technology into a holding company, Joltid Ltd., and then had Skype license the technology before the purchase closed.

A few years later, eBay fired the former founder of Skype, but since he still owned Joltid, he found a loophole in his own contract to terminate the licensing deal, by saying that using the source code for patent filings was against the license agreement.

eBay ended up having to reimplement the technology, but they couldn’t do it as well and it cost them a fortune.
