I think it is wonderful.
Teaching can be frustrating and boring. What makes it rewarding is when you find a student who really responds, who learns what you have to teach and even takes it farther. I recall the great joy I got after one lecture I gave that I felt wasn’t particularly good; a student came up and asked a question that made it clear he had actually understood what I had explained so poorly. I realized that unlike a computer programer, I did not have to be perfect!
I get particular joy from those students who dig deeper, who are clearly interested in learning beyond the requirements. Those are the students who will make me proud some day. When they eventually make a great achievement, in science or business or world affairs, I’ll be able to think that I made some small contribution to their success, and I’ll be able to brag, “That was one of my students!”
