I’d like to focus on an Indian Temple which took centuries to complete.
Meenakshi Amman Temple – Madurai (India)
History says, this temple was actually built in 6th Century BC. In 14th century, the temple was plundered and got looted of its valuables. It was rebuilt around the 16th century in accordance to shilpa shastra. (Science of sculptures)
Coming to the point, why did it take so many years to complete this temple?
Here you go.
It houses 14 Gopurams (gateway towers as shown in the above picture), ranging from 45–50 m in height.
Stay with me, I’ll show you a closer look of those Gopurams (Gateway towers)
All gopurams (gateway towers) are multi-storeyed structures, covered with thousands of stone figures of animals, gods and demons.
Here, more closer look.
So, ALL gopurams(gateway towers) have this detailing.
There are an estimated 33,000 sculptures in the temple.
Look at the time people have invested to make it look so simple yet with extensive detail.
The temple complex is divided into a number of concentric quadrangular enclosures contained by high masonry walls.
Interior design of the temple is …. I’m out of words. Look here.

The garish color painting of the towers and the figurines were of very recent additions during the renovation around the 1960s. Earlier they were of the original color of the stones with which they were sculpted.
