C is not compiled to assembly code. It is compiled to machine code. The machine instructions can be represented by mnemonics (the assembly).

The compilers for different languages have to deal with different issues mainly due to levels of abstraction. C has very little abstraction compared to other high level languages (hence it is typically referred to a as a medium level language). The less abstraction the easier it will be for the compiler to produce very fast machine code.
